What is a Megapixel The word pixel is a derived from pix (from "pictures.) and el (for "element"). A pixel, is the smallest element of a picture represented on a display screen. The picture is built up of pixels. Each pixel represents a portion of the original image; more pixels provide more accurate representations of the original. The intensity of each pixel is variable. A colour is typically represented by a combination of four basic colours known as cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. The digital image sensor in a camera is made up of millions of individual photosites. These photosites are referred to as Pixels. Megapixel means one million pixels. A two-megapixel camera can produce images with two million pixels. Pixels are square shaped and form a grid, a 1-megapixel camera will produce an image roughly 1200 pixels wide by 900 pixels high.
